The Minneapolis Shooting
People are telling different versions of the story. I thought I would add to them.
My take on the killing:
I’ve watched several videos of the Minneapolis shooting. From these, I have imagined a narrative:
Renee and Becca Good were witnessing some kind of ICE raid. Renee was driving; Becca was filming. Renee seemed to be having a reasonable conversation with two or more ICE officers. She was waving other cars by. Becca was filming from the other side.
At that point, Jon Ross circled the car from the passenger side and got in front of the car. Renee was just smiling to the officers and said, “I’m not mad at you.”
At that point, they told her to get out of the car. She apparently refused and one officer tried to reach in her window and open the door, presumably to drag her out, at which point she started to move forward, turning her wheels to miss the officer near the left front.
Ross, who she obviously didn’t see was just about on the left front fender. She clearly wasn’t looking at him, her attention fixed on the two officers trying to open her door. Ross jumped out of the way, drew his gun, and fired in the front window. As the car went by, he shot twice more in the open window. The car accelerated and crashed.
A kind interpretation would be that Ross wildly overreacted and should be tried for manslaughter. Someone who overreacts like that should not be an official with a gun and a license to shoot citizens more or less at will.
I should note that earlier I saw a White House circulated film that made it seem as if the car was going much faster than all the other videos—i.e., it was doctored to make it seem as if Good were trying to hit Ross. I can no longer find that video—of course it would be easy to establish that it had been sped up.
